Bus stops to be modernized soon; BEST will provide a solar-powered bus stop
Bus stops in Mumbai will see a much needed upgrade in the coming days. Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) plans to provide a solar powered bus stop. The Free Press Journal had reported on BEST’s plans for an LED-based passenger information system to be installed at bus stops, as well as plantings above.
BEST Undertaking officials are working on a pilot project for a solar-powered bus stop. It is likely to have mobile charging points which can be used by passengers waiting at that bus stop. These charging points will be powered by solar panels installed on the roof of the bus stop.
“In fact, they’re also working on a concept of small motion-sensor cassette fans that will turn on when a passenger enters,” said Ketan Kadam, the mind behind Green Bus Stop Concept. Kadam and his team are already working on green bus stops, one of which is being installed at the famed Mahalaxmi Studios.
It will also be powered by solar panels. It will also have a 48-hour battery backup solar panel system. Likely specs for each bus stop are 250W solar panel, with inverter, 150mAh lead acid tubular solar battery, etc. The location is yet to be finalized for the same.
The BEST will install an LED-based passenger information system at 300 bus stops across the city. They will also install 40 green bus stops with plantings on top and fitness equipment on the sides. These would be on the lines of those bus stops found in other international cities around the world. They will start transforming 105 bus stops. According to sources, there are about 40 such open-air bus stops planned throughout the city.
Of the 40 bus stops, 10 will be in Worli. The watering of these open gardens on the roofs of the bus stops is done by drip irrigation. These bus stops have been called “Green Bus Stops” where the BEST plans to have companies take them over and keep them under corporate social responsibility. The cost of each bus stop with a rooftop garden and fitness corner on the sides will cost Rs 7-8 lakh.
Sources also said that bus stops will be linked to the GPS installed inside the buses, which will also display the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of bus route numbers. In the future, public toilets, which are currently in disrepair, will also have these rooftop gardens, with the first likely to emerge in South Mumbai.
