THOMASTON – Local small businesses and nonprofits have faced many challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These organizations have had to reduce their staff, increasing the remaining workload, while also trying to gain access to the appropriate PPE for their teams. Thomaston Savings Bank has offered a variety of benefits and programs not only to provide relief, but also to support the economic growth of struggling businesses. This support has played a central role in the survival of many small businesses through the economic turmoil of the pandemic.

In an ongoing effort to support the business community, Thomaston Savings Bank was recently approved for a New England Job Resumption Grant in the amount of $ 50,000. These funds will be awarded to ten small businesses in the amount of $ 5,000 per organization.

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston offers the Jobs for New England program. The JNE program provides discounted advances to members to support loans to small businesses in New England, which stimulate economic growth and development. The goal of this program is to relieve financial stress and enable small businesses to better navigate through the pandemic. This program provided a total of $ 6.1 million in grant recovery for 2020 leading to the 2021 phase.

Ward Leonard’s corporate video receives award


THOMASTON – Ward Leonard’s corporate video, Ward Leonard: The Power of Uptime, has been selected as the Bronze Winner in the General – Non-Broadcast, Corporate Image category of the 42nd Annual Telly Awards.

The video was produced by a local Connecticut video production company, MazzMedia, and features employees at the Ward Leonard site in Thomaston. In the video, employees share how their daily work makes a difference and the importance of products at Ward Leonard.

Applications sought for the Green Building Awards

NEW HAVEN – The CT Green Building Council (CTGBC) has opened the call for nominations for its 2021 annual green building awards.

CTGBC has recognized excellence in green building since 2006.

These prestigious awards aim to recognize excellence in the design and practice of construction, which supports the broader goals of using the built environment as a vehicle for resource efficiency, community access and resilience to tackle the challenges of human health and climate change in the state of Connecticut and beyond.

The awards program invites nominations from Trailblazer and Green Advocate from individuals, communities or organizations, as well as full project submissions of various types demonstrating successful sustainable strategies.

The winners will be recognized at our annual celebration in October, which also includes an outstanding enduring keynote speaker. In recent years, the awards program has grown, increasing the quality of submissions, participation, sponsorship and attendance.

Webster Announces Expansion of Regional President Roles

WATERBURY – Webster Bank is pleased to announce the expanded roles of Connecticut regional presidents.

Timothy D. Bergstrom, regional president, will now oversee the Hartford, New Haven and Middlesex counties markets, including Greater Bristol, New Britain, Hartford and New Haven. Michael L. O’Connor, Regional President, will continue to oversee the Greater Waterbury market. In addition, Martin H. Anderson has been appointed Regional President for the Fairfield County market, including Greater Stamford and Danbury.

A resident of Bethel, Connecticut, Anderson joined Webster in 2009 and is senior vice president of its Middle Market banking group. He has over 25 years of experience creating flexible lending solutions for family businesses and working with private equity sponsors to fund mergers and acquisitions, working capital and income generating assets.

Anderson is a board member for the Exit Planning Exchange in Fairfield County and is a member of the Fairfield County First Tee Event Planning Committee. He has also served as vice president of United Way of Western Connecticut and is a past board member for Junior Achievement of Southwestern Connecticut.

He joins Webster’s regional presidents serving in the Boston, Rhode Island-Southeastern Massachusetts, Metro New York and Philadelphia markets.

In 2014, Bergstrom and O’Connor were appointed regional presidents of Greater Hartford and Greater Waterbury, respectively.

A resident of Burlington, Connecticut, Bergstrom joined Webster in 1998 and is senior vice president, currently responsible for Business Banking activities in Connecticut. In his role, he is responsible for all aspects of business development, community outreach and relationship management for corporate and professional services clients.

Bergstrom is a member of the board of directors of CCARC, New Britain; Waterbury Housing Fund; Community Investment Corporation, Hamden; and Waterbury Regional Chamber of Commerce. He also sits on the Metro Hartford Alliance Budget and Finance Committee. Bergstrom is a former director of the New Britain Museum of American Art, Palace Theater, American Liver Foundation, Connecticut Chapter, New Britain Chamber of Commerce, Easter Seals, and United Way of Greater Waterbury. He was also the campaign chair for the United Way of Greater Waterbury.

A resident of Washington, Connecticut, O’Connor joined Webster in 2012 and is responsible for all aspects of the bank’s corporate real estate portfolio. He has over 20 years of real estate and construction experience and retired from the United States Army after serving 26 years as an officer in the Reserves, National Guard and the Army active.

O’Connor is the past president and campaign committee member of the United Way of Greater Waterbury’s annual United Way campaign; and is a member of the board of directors of the Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation, Palace Theater and Waterbury Development Corp. He is also a member of the board of directors and secretary of the YMCA of Greater Waterbury; board member and member of the finance committee of Waterbury PAL; and, is Chairman and Board Member of Waterbury Community Investment, which focuses on building housing for the Town of Waterbury.
