Trade between China and ASEAN has grown 85-fold since the two sides established their dialogue relationship in 1991. Since 2009, China remained ASEAN’s largest trading partner for 12 consecutive years, while in 2020, ASEAN also became from China most important business partner.

In the first half of this year, bilateral trade between China and ASEAN continued their strong expansion, recording annual growth of 38.2% and mutual investments of more than 310 billion dollars.

Regarding the future relationship between China and ASEAN, the Chinese president made five proposals, urging efforts to move closer to a closer China-ASEAN community with a common future and make the region and the world even more prosperous.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has proven once again that no place on Earth is an isolated island enjoying absolute security, and only universal security brings real security,” said the Chinese president, expressing the need to build a safe and secure home together.

He added that China stands ready to work with ASEAN countries to jointly build a “health shield” for the region. Under the initiative, according to Xi, China to donate 150 million additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines to ASEAN countries and make an additional contribution $ 5 million to the ASEAN COVID-19 Response Fund.

“Joint efforts are needed to preserve stability in the South China Sea and make it a sea of ​​peace, friendship and cooperation,” Xi said.

President Xi also announced a series of measures to build a prosperous home with ASEAN countries, including providing ASEAN with another $ 1.5 billion development aid over the next three years to support their fight against COVID-19 and economic recovery, purchasing up to 150 billion dollars value of ASEAN agricultural products over the next five years, providing 1,000 pieces of advanced and applicable technology to ASEAN and supporting a program for 300 young ASEAN scientists to come to China exchanges over the next five years.
