Malawi: University hails Alliance One for equipment donation

Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES) Lilongwe Campus Student Welfare Committee says that the continuous availability of different medical equipment in the school plays a crucial role in the education of students as they depend of them to conduct effective medical training, especially during practical training. Classes.

Committee Chairman Isaac Kamfozi made the remarks on Tuesday when Alliance One Tobacco donated some 16 durable Class II Littman stethoscopes, which learners at the medical training center critically need for their smooth learning.

According to Kamfozi, the majority of college students do not have stethoscopes, a development that affects their routine lessons as such equipment plays a crucial role when diagnosing patients whenever they attend practical trainings in hospitals.

“We are very grateful to Alliance One Tobacco for making this donation, as it will go a long way in helping other students here be well equipped during our routine practical trainings in hospitals, especially during testing and analysis” , Kamfozi said.

Kamfozi explained that earlier, students received similar donations from other supporters, but more so, stethoscopes were not enough for every student. Therefore, the donation of the 16 stethoscopes by Alliance One will reduce the challenges faced by learners.

“We used to be about 86 students who didn’t have our own stethoscopes on this campus, but with this donation from Alliance One as well as other organizations and individuals before, that challenge is slowly easing. So far, around 32 students are the ones who still don’t have their own stethoscopes, so I urge other supporters, especially businesses and organizations, to help out,” he said.

In his remarks, Alliance One Tobacco Malawi’s general affairs manager, Ben Kawonga, said his company thought it wise to donate the equipment after being asked by the student welfare committee to help them with various medical equipment, including stethoscopes, which are in short supply.

“As a responsible corporate entity, we have decided to donate these items to our colleagues here at Lilongwe campus after receiving their request. As we all know, in a few years to come, these students in medicine will become our reliable doctors who assist patients in different hospitals and clinics across the country, including conducting crucial operations for women and children,” Kawonga said.

According to Kawonga, his company has also thought it wise to come and help these students, as the education, health and social welfare sectors also fall under his company’s corporate social responsibility pillars and therefore find themselves obliged to support these students. ‘to help.

“We believe this donation will help these students here learn effectively and achieve greater goals in their medical careers, especially when performing diagnostics on patients in hospitals where they are taking routine hands-on classes. “, did he declare.

Acting Registrar of KUHES Lilongwe Campus, Stuart Chirambo also expressed his gratitude to Alliance One Tobacco for donating the medical equipment to the students of the school, adding that the institution mainly depends on the financial support from the government which , in most cases, is not enough to meet all the needs at school.

“As a school, we are very pleased with this timely donation and so I urge other businesses and organizations across the country to help us, especially in areas such as textbooks, internet access and construction. hostels, among others,” Chirambo said.

In addition to the education and health sectors, Alliance One Tobacco’s corporate social responsibility program also focuses on selected community sustainability initiatives such as environmental conservation management, social protection and l water and sanitation, among others.
