Sappi North America opens the 2021 “Ideas that Matter” call for applications

21st Annual Grants Program Aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

BOSTON, 12 October 2021 / PRNewswire / – Sappi North America, Inc., a leading producer and supplier of diverse paper, packaging and pulp products, today called for applications for the 2021 Ideas that grant program Matter. Created over 20 years ago, Ideas that Matter invites designers around the world to show how printed design can improve the lives of others.

This year, designers will be able to submit ideas that include paper packaging projects in addition to print and digital communication projects. Participants are encouraged to align their submissions with at least one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and focus on social, environmental, health and community issues. Sappi has made these goals an integral part of its business and sustainability practices.

Ideas that Matter is the only grant program of its kind in the paper industry and is a key part of Sappi’s corporate social responsibility efforts. Since 1999, the program has provided nearly $ 14 million to support more than 500 projects that change lives, communities and, ultimately, the planet.

Selection criteria and how to register

Proposals for ideas that matter are assessed for their creativity, potential effectiveness and practicality by a panel of independent judges selected annually and influential in the design industry.

This year’s jury includes:

  • Andrew Gibbs, CEO and Editor-in-Chief, The Dieline

  • Libby cole, Director, Labor Department

  • Gage Mitchell, Founder and Creative Director, Modern Species

  • Bryony Gomez-Palacio, co-founder, UnderConsideration

  • Diane holton, Senior Assistant Artistic Director, AARP

The Ideas That Matter call for applications is open to individual designers, design firms, agencies, in-house corporate design departments, design instructors, individual design students, and groups of design students. Grants range from $ 5,000 To US $ 50,000 by project. Each request must include an IRS 501 (c) 3 letter or Canadian equivalent from the applicant’s non-profit organization.

Participants have up to January 7, 2022 To 11:59 p.m. PST submit their application via the online portal.
