UPM moved its stationery site from Shotton to Eren
(UPM, Helsinki, September 30, 2021, 2:15 p.m. EEST) – UPM has permanently shut down paper production at its Shotton newsprint mill site in North Wales, UK. The site and all associated assets will now be transferred to Eren Paper Ltd, a subsidiary of Modern Karton Sanayi Ve Ticaret A.Ş., the containerboard and corrugated packaging business of Turkish industrial conglomerate Eren Holding (” Eren ”), thus closing the transaction announced in May 2021. Eren will now begin work on the site conversion.
The Renewable Power Generation Plant, Material Recovery and Recycling Facility (MRRF) will continue to operate throughout the conversion process as reported by Eren, corresponding to their role in the utility infrastructure regional.
UPM Shotton was founded in 1983 and produces newsprint. The production capacity in recent years was 260,000 tons per year. The paper mill currently employs 183 people directly and an additional 231 people in the material recovery and site recycling facility and other service operations.
UPM Communication Papers will remain committed to the United Kingdom and will continue to supply its customers with a full range of newsprint, magazines and fine papers. UPM will also continue to source recycled paper from the UK.
“The shutdown of newsprint production at UPM Shotton ends a very successful chapter in the history of UPM Communication Papers in the UK. I would like to thank our colleagues at the site for their committed and professional work over the past decades. The strong support of the local authorities has been essential for the success of Shotton, as has the loyalty of our customers ”, states Winfried Schaur, Executive Vice President of UPM Communication Papers.
“So I am very happy that the upcoming transformation of the plant offers a very positive long-term perspective for the people of Shotton and for the region as such. The transparent and reliable collaboration with Eren over the past few months is a very solid basis for this future development. It is important to stress that UPM Communication Papers will remain firmly rooted as a UK paper supplier in the future, ”Schaur continues.
